Oasis Story

By Noel GALLAGHER

Oasis, long-time, self-proclaimed biggest band in the world, have done it. They are the biggest band in the world.
Over three short years they have become a musical colossus of such size that they dwarf bands who were their peers only months ago.
Barely stopping to catch breath as they storm the charts on both sides of the Atlantic, Oasis fill stadiums like they're going out of fashion and leave a trail of destruction -now as much of a trademark as their anthems- in their wake.
Their three year history, says thir manager Marcus Russell, "feels like three minutes". Now Noel Gallagher -the 28-year-old brains and inspiration behind music's latest, greatest phenomenon- tells the Oasis story in his own words. The formation of the band ; their first gig, and the truth behind every single from Supersonic to Wonderwall.
On the eve of their triumphant home-coming gigs at Maine Road, Manchester, Noel tells his King Midas story : the fairy tale of a Mancunian lad done good ; where everything he touched turned to Platinium -several times over.
"My first ambition was to make a record, my second one was to get in the charts and both of those happened at the same time, which was cool". Noel reflects proudly : "My next ambition was to make an album, I did that and it went in at number one. Got in the Guinness Book of Records as well. Very nice. Every time we set ourselves a goal that we think is going to take two weeks to achieve, we do it in half an hour".
"Once upon a time : Guigs, Bonehead and Tony McCarroll formed a band called The Rain -not a very good name for a band- then they got rid of the singer and got anohter one in and his name was Liam. They became known as Oasis. They did one gig and this singer had a brother called Noel. Liam said to Noel, 'Do you think we're any good ?' and Noel said, 'Not particularly, no'. So Liam said, 'Why don't you write us some songs ?'. Noel said, 'I might be able to manage that' -and so Noel joined Oasis.
We went to Scotland to support a band who used to share a practice room with us, called The Sister Lovers. They invited us, but when we got there the bill was full, so they wouldn't let us play. We'd driven 250 miles to get there and were determined to play because we'd charged a load of mates money for the petrol and the bus and they really wanted us to play. So we gently persuaded the owners of the pub to give us, like ten minutes. We came off stage and Alan McGee (the head of Creation Records) just said, 'Have you got a record deal ?' I said no, he said what's your group called, I told him Oasis.
Being famous is great, I love it man, it's the best thing, getting stopped walking down the street for an autograph is the best feeling in the world
We can't agree on anything, we can't even agree to not agree. Sometimes Liam and I get on on a Wednesday, and sometimes we don't. Sometimes we get on on a Monday and sometimes we don't.
We're just brothers.
